16. Faye Webster - “She Won’t Go Away”
Faye Webster released one of my favorite albums of 2017. It was a record full of Pop music that dabbled in both Indie and Country, dipping its toes into each while never fully submerging itself into either. The result was collection of absolute gems. Every song on the album has the luster of Pop, the intimacy of Indie, and the autobiographical strength of Country. Its like a hybrid of perfection, or rather an evolutionary mutant, the sort that other artists aspire to but are often at a loss to replicate.
The beauty of this particular jam lies within its innocence. It captures the unspoken essence of a crush – of loving from a distance, patiently biding one’s time and lurking within the shadows of an already formed relationship while secretly longing for its demise. After all, crushes are suffocating things to experience (hence the name), sort of like an invisible hand that’s continuously wringing you dry. You’re perpetually trapped within the cold and barren confines of loneliness, kept warm only by the dual emotions of hope and hate. Its a nonsensical state of mind, simultaneously infuriating and invigorating, but then again all of the best ones always are.
