23. A. Savage - “Phantom Limbo”
This song is another one of those jams that comes steeped in a viscous layer of nostalgia, whether its the dusty and creaking aura evoked by the slide guitar or the rose-tinted nihilism of the lyrics, the song seems to perfectly capture the feeling of a mind that has lost a hold of the present. It fades in and out of the here and now. Too consumed by the gravity of the past or what could have been to remain grounded, it wanders aimlessly, from topic to topic, metaphor to metaphor, trying its best to find some sort of meaning within the confusion. Only the meaning is elusive, like the wind, always felt and hinted at, forming an infinite sense of presque vu, teasing the outstretched fingers of the mind and whispering from a distance, but forever refusing to materialize. It’s heartache mixing with hopelessness, haunting the soul as it ages beyond its prime and sinks into the warm embrace of resignation, forever swaddled within the memories of what once was and will never be again.
