23. Super Bummer - “Buffalo Bride”
If the lords of Indie Rock came down from the heavens and choose an heir to carry the mantle of the genre I think they would bequeeth the title to Super Bummer. Super Bummer is a band that seems to channel the soul of Indie Rock and conjure up everything that made the genre so great to begin with. Yet they do it without becoming boring or anachronistic, because they’re not regurgitating the past, rather they’re students of the genre, staying true to form, but using it as inspiration instead of law. It’s inspired stuff, and they steep their inspiration in their own own artistry, so that you can see the modern bleeding through the past. The result is a song of earnest apathetic sorrow, with guitars shining and shredding through the veil of lo-fi static to pierce the hazy atmosphere of your stoned thoughts. It’s low-key beautiful, exactly as the genre was intended to be.
