24. Noname - “Yesterday”
The instrumentals on this track are like hugging yourself with a daydream. They’re so whimsically chill, like a cartoon theme song from the 90′s meets a dimly lit late night lounge on the backstreets of some big city. It makes you want to drift away to that happy place, to get muddled and sort of lose your grasp on the present. However, at the same time there’s Noname’s voice. She keeps the track grounded with the earnest flair of her poetry. Sure its a scattered delivery, almost a little reminiscent of scat itself, but she manages to hold it together, injecting life into the instrumentals and giving impetus to the haze. She lets her thoughts flow freely and uninhibited, but there’s cohesion to them, a reason for why she feels this way, a clearly defined spirit that’s inspiring the raw honesty. She has a purpose, a legacy, a destiny, a goal, a responsibility – and she won’t be deterred.
