29. Young Thug - “Raw (Might Just) [Prod. Treasure Fingers/The Treasury]”

I love making these lists because I get to throw you all curveballs and put songs like this on them. This track is like glimpsing an alternate reality, a reality where Young Thug was never an eccentric MC, but instead finds himself as an unconventional R&B crooner. Its beautiful, but beautiful in the way that a Shar-Pei or a Star Nosed Mole is beautiful. It’s a strange beauty, a beauty you feel even as you recoil, a victim to all of your preconceived notions of beauty or perfection. But despite it all it is perfect. It’s perfect in its own way, because it embraces its flaws, and uses those flaws to make it something truly unique while pulling off something that you would never expect.

Now maybe I’m wrong, or at least in a small minority, and you disagree and think this song is terrible or at the very least ridiculous, but I can’t help but love it. Maybe it’s indescribable, but there’s something great here. And if I see it, well then there has to be others out there who can glimpse the same beauty. Regardless, I think we can all agree that if diamonds were to make a sound it would definitely be ‘boing’. So I dare you all to look at a diamond in the near future and find yourself not whispering ‘boing!’ within your head.
