34. Field Medic - “Powerful Love”

I’m an unabashed fan of raw and organic sounds. The type of songs that seem as if they arose directly from the moment of conviction, almost as if the emotion and inspiration is flowing in real time, directly from the soul of the artist and into the recording.

It’s the purest form of art, and it’s part of what makes the early work of bands so alluring. In the beginning, prior to gaining fans or a real following, artists are more often than not performing solely for themselves (unless of course they’re only concern is pandering to the lowest common denominator and gaining fame). Bands and artists within this protozoic phase have a special tinge to them, an added aura of transparency and earnestness, that makes them all the more relatable. The artificial sheen of production has yet to invade they’re songs and cloud all of the real emotion with contrived affectation and regurgitated themes. It’s art without the veil of separation or the sort of premeditation and repetition that destroys the moment and removes any sense of authenticity.

This jam fully succeeds in stripping away the veil. You can imagine the messy and quickly written lyrics scrawled within a notebook, barely perceptible, so hurried and concerned with capturing the moment that they have trouble remaining cohesive. It’s almost as if the song possesses a life of its own and Field Medic is simply the vessel charged with expressing it in a way us humans can understand. It’s a beautiful yet transitory thing to witness, like a landscape catching the light just right, creating a brief window of fuzz-filled warmth for the soul to bask within. Don’t let the moment pass you by.
