45. Zack Villere - “Cool”

This jam is definitely an introvert anthem. However, I would venture so far as to label it a human anthem (because lets be honest, we all have a little introvert within us, some of us just happen to be better at hiding it than others). It perfectly captures that sense of self-doubt we all feel at times, that indecision that grips the soul as we drift along throughout the various crests and troughs of life.

Us humans are not consistent beings. We are not finished works, but rather continuously changing and evolving. We feel different as we pass through time, we adapt and alter the filter of our perception and fall victim to the whims and influence of things outside of our control. As a result, we see things different from one moment to the next. How we interact and communicate with the world is constantly changing. We are not static beings and never will be (or lets hope not at least). It’s both the gift and the curse of sentience, and in essence what defines us as individuals. It’s control and freewill locked amidst the chaos of chance and an indefatigable determinism

Zack sums this up perfectly, and he does so by reducing it to its simplest and purest essence, a singular moment that any teenager or young adult has experienced at one point or another. Its that conflict between individuality and conformity – that fine line we all strive to walk between being ourselves and blending in. It’s a slippery sensation, continuously greased by our own doubts and the overarching Overton Window of popular perception, like a desperate grasp for self-confidence akin to reaching for a bar of soap with wet hands. Its unavoidable. Sooner or later we have to make a choice – to choose our truth of the moment.
