61. Porches - “Mood”

Much like the previous song, this jam is yet another first of many to grace this list. Pool was an album packed with subtly smooth tracks of relaxed urgency. It’s almost as if each one is being sung from behind a veil of depression, or at the very least a thick layer of depressive apathy. The songs are full of depth, and yet the depth seems to originate from the recesses of a battered and broken soul. The delivery is subdued and monochromatic, but despite the overwhelming weight of each track there’s an underlying brightness – almost as if there are pulsing colors trying to break through the bleakness or a bright mist of emotion trying to settle in and disrupt the darkness. Its the yin and yang of the psyche in motion – confidence and shyness, happiness and sadness, hopefulness and despair, earnestness and retreat – they’re all here, intermingling and cascading as they provide the medium through which the protagonist’s (and thus our own) thoughts flow.
