JOEY BADA$$ - REJEX
Joey Bada$$ is a 17 year old Brooklynite and part of “The Progressive Era” Hip-Hop collective. He first started gaining attention earlier this year when he released his debut mixtape “1999"which received a lot of critical acclaim throughout the world of Hip-Hop. Even though he’s young, unlike other young rappers (the members Odd Future or Chief Keef) who take pride in their ignorance and the ignorance of their lyrics, Joey’s lyrics are actually honest, creative and clever. Another great part about his music is that almost all the tracks he raps over harken back to the "Golden Age” of New York Hip-Hop. So you have this young rapper with these smooth lyrics rapping over these chill, old school beats, it’s the best of both worlds.
Recently this past week, He released a new mixtape titled “Rejex”. The mixtape is composed of tracks that didn’t make it to his “1999” tape, as well as songs from when he was 15 years old. Even though the mixtape is essentially composed of old material, it’s still fresh, which is a testament to the skill this young emcee has. The production on the album includes the likes of Madlib, 9th Wonder, MF Doom, Lord Finesse, Kirk Knight and more. Thats a pretty sweet cast of producers, the first three being some of my favourite beat crafters in the Hip-Hop community.
