Phosphorescent - "Muchacho"
Matthew Houck is Phosphorescent. The guy is like Bon Iver’s lesser known brother. Except instead of holing himself up in the Wisconsin woods, he heads down to sunny Mexico, to drift around in a pleasantly foreign environment. He’s an introvert, that finds inspiration from solitude, although its not a heartbreaking loneliness, its a comfortable introversion. He’s less refined, not as wispy in his vocals, more forward, raw, and less pretentious. I couldn’t ever see myself hanging out with Bon Iver, I feel like he’d be whispering the whole time, it’d be kind of awkward, and I’d have to keep asking him to repeat himself, to the point of where it would get uncomfortable. But Phosphorescent is like that quiet, chill dude, that only speaks up when he has something really good to say, and I can appreciate that.
He recently released a new LP entitled “Muchacho” on March 19th, and its chock-full of great, mellow, down-tempo jams. So go ahead and check it out, and let the pleasantly subdued melodies narrate your Saturday afternoon.
