16. Moonface and Siinai - “City Wrecker”
This jam is a reimagination, or rather a reincarnation, of the stark yet beautiful piano-only version featured on Moonface’s previous EP. On this version Spencer Krug (the mastermind behind Moonface and coincidentally one of my musical idols) has employed the help of the Finnish rock band Siinai, and the result is a fuller-bodied and slower burning version with more heft to it. Whereas the previous version was frail and more stately, this one is more grounded and emits its own sort of gravity composed of confidence. It methodically plods along, more comfortable and secure in itself, as if strengthened by hindsight Krug can now look back upon the past without shuddering within the grasp of emotion. It’s as if time has healed the wounds – the scars are still there, but Krug can at least now see the underlying purpose or meaning behind what previously seemed so monumentally devastating.
Life goes on – much like the guitar riff that echoes throughout this track. The biting yet smooth tone acts as an injection of emotion. It’s intoxicating, carrying a sort of hypnotizing effect that the listener can’t shake. It carries the track forward even as it weighs it down. It gives it an invigorating strength, and yet at the same time exposes an underlying weakness, like some sort of wet glue you can’t seem to completely get rid from your fingers.
