53. LCD Soundsystem - “american dream”

This song is like the silent scream of aging, the hum of thoughts as they expire to form the melancholic theme song of passing time, always playing just below the surface, etched into your conscience as one day fades into the other to form a life that leads to a slowly declining average. This decline reveals itself in many ways. You get hungover more easily, you gain weight, your body starts to tire and ache for no apparent reason, you have to stretch before any and all exertion, you get tired before midnight, you start to wrinkle and grow hair from the last vestiges of a hairless youth (and these are just a few). It’s as if time is finally weighing down upon you, ravaging what once was, reminding you that you are indeed mortal and that your time as the new and glistening hope of humanity is fading. You’re getting old and becoming irrelevant, fading into the faceless masses of history, of everyone who came before – everyone else who was once fodder for a cruel and unforgiving system that refuses to change or slow down. You’re no different than the rest. You’re caught in the slop and circling the drain, staring into abyss.

On a lighter note, I love the line that says grab your clothes and head to the doorway, if you dance out, no one complains. It such a simple yet endearing image, and those of us who have ever frequented the french exit know just how accurate and relatable of an image it is.
