89. Her’s - “Cool With You”

This jam is like the theme song for every 20 something year old trying to fall in love. It embodies the sense of apathetic passion that seems to be endemic in modern romance. It’s affected dispassion, the self-imposed barrier or filter young people surround themselves with, insulating their hearts and their pride from any sort of risk that might make them appear vulnerable or weak.

Her’s portrays such a mood perfectly here. The song is dripping in a viscid chillness, and yet it has undercurrents of passion, almost as if there’s a low flame slowly disrupting the viscosity, loosening it up and imbuing it with excitement. The barrier is slipping away and the vulnerabilities are showing. It’s like a 21st century version of Cyrano De Bergerac. The balcony scene is underway, only this time the words are less eloquent and it all seems to be taking place from an even greater distance, behind the glow of handheld screen or solely within the recesses of thought – a fitting representation of the modern world if there ever was one, but hey, at least it’s a start.
