HIP[STER]-HOP TRACKS OF THE WEEK
There’s nothing quite like a song with a great flow over sweet beats. These are my favourite Hip-Hop songs of the past couple weeks that you probably won’t hear on the shitty airwaves.
THIS WEEKS TRACKS:
This first track is a new one from Asher Roth called “The World Is Not Enough”. Asher Roth is probably best known for his track “I Love College” which came out back in 2009. However, since then Asher has matured a lot as an artist. Last year he released his mixtape “Pabst & Jazz”, which I felt really showed Asher getting comfortable with his music and coming into his own style. That tape was full of songs with real, socially conscientious lyrics that were far deeper in meaning then his previous songs. “The World Is Not Enough” is no different, and finds Roth starting up right where he left off, addressing real world issues with catchy lyrics and beats. Keep your eyes peeled for his next album “Is This Too Orange?” coming out this year, and if you haven’t checked out “Pabst & Jazz” yet, do yourself a favour and go give it a listen.
Blu is an underrated rapper and producer from here in Los Angeles. This track “Rap Dope” is going to be on his upcoming LP “Good To Be Home” which will be produced entirely by Bombay. On the track Blu flows perfectly through the lo-fi beat as it floats along. Stay on the look out for more new material by Blu & Bomnbay.
CurT@!n$ is an emcee from Brooklyn New York that has been gaining popularity recently. On this track “RutHLe$$”, he teams up with the Los Angeles based rapper and TDE affiliate Schoolboy Q. Schoolboy Q has been blowing up as of recently, getting featured on great tracks left and right. This one is no different, with a Biggie sample in it, its got that nice old school vibe, with two young rappers spitting over it.
∂eƒ Sound is another artist out of Los Angeles. He recently released his debut LP “△nything: thee.idea.machine”, which is an awesome album. If you havent checked out already, do yourself a favour and amend that mistake. This new track, “Look.Like.Me. aka SavorIt!” is different then most of that album, and will be featured as a bonus track on the upcoming physical trilluxe edition of the album. It’s a fun song, if not his most thought provoking, that’ll make you wanna awkwardly move your body to it as he lazily raps over the beat.
Sound FX is a Hip-Hop duo from… you guessed it Los Angeles, California. I know I’m from the LA area, so naturally I’m biased to artists from here, but I really didn’t mean to feature so many LA emcees, Southern California’s just got way too much talent at the moment. Anyway Sound FX recently released the “Neverland EP” to tide fans over as they prepare to drop their debut album “The Sunset LP”. This track “The Birds & the Bees” is off of their recent EP and is very smooth and chill, so sit back and enjoy.
This new track, “I’m From Texas” from Houston rapper Trae Tha Truth features a bunch of fellow Texan rappers. It’s definitely a trill track, but I mean what else would you expect from a song about being from Texas? So pour some lean and go drive around bumping this track with the windows down on a nice warm, sunny day, regardless of where your from.
Nesby Phips is an emcee out of New Orleans, Louisiana. His new track, “Dusty Roads” features fellow New Orleans emcee Curren$y. Curren$y is one of my favourite young artists out there. So of course, any song with him on it is immediately considered dope by me. This track also has that trill vibe to it, and is very laid back, so go ahead and play it right after the Trae The Truth song as you continue your lean induced car ride.
Sir Michael Rocks is another one of my favourite young emcees. I’ve listened to him ever since he first begun rapping as Mikey Rocks in the Cool Kids. However, throughout the years I feel like he’s grown more comfortable and really found a style that works for him and compliments his skills. Nowadays, being part of the Jets, he releases a lot of laid back tracks that are smooth and perfect for your herb consumption soundtrack. This new track “So Stupid” featuring Vic Mensa is no different. The track is part of Chicago based indie label Closed Sessions latest release “Closed Sessions Vol. 2”.
This final track, “Black Acura” is by Los Angeles collective Pac Div and features Pittsburgh emcee Mac Miller. The unlikely combination of artists surprisingly works together quite well. The beat by Thelonious Martin is very minimalistic and slow paced, which really allows for the wordplay to be showcased. It’s good track to just vibe out to as you sit back and chill consuming your favourite vice, whatever it may be.
